Sweetpacks Toolbar – Virus Removal Guide

Sweetpacks Toolbar is a browser hijacker that is commonly bundled with a variety of free software that you can download from the Internet. Sweetpacks is considered a browser hijacker because it changes your web browser’s home page  and default search provider to search.sweetpacks.com without your permission.

What Is Sweetpacks Toolbar?

The Sweetpacks Toolbar is frequently categorized as a browser hijacker because it takes control of the Web browser and does things the user may not have specifically requested. For example, even if you set your “home” page, Sweetpacks will display its own site (http://search.sweetpacks.com/). Or when you try to get to Google or Bing to perform a search, the browser will redirect to Sweetpacks Search (search.Sweetpacks.com). A toolbar will also appear at the top of your browser window.

It’s technically not a virus, but it does exhibit plenty of malicious traits, such as rootkit capabilities to hook deep into the operating system, browser hijacking, and in general just interfering with the user experience. The industry generally refers to it as a “PUP,” or potentially unwanted program.

How Did I Get the Sweetpacks Toolbar?

Perhaps you installed a free software that had bundled within their installer the Sweetpacks Toolbar, such as Language Learning, ClickDownload, DealFinder, Yontoo or FBPhotoZoom. Any of these products can install the Sweetpacks Toolbar. What’s even more likely is that you installed some other application which came with the Sweetpacks search bar and you didn’t notice when it got installed—you failed to uncheck it as an optional ride-along during the install process of something you actually wanted. Several applications distributed on CNET’s download.com have Sweetpacks Toolbar bundled in, for example. When installed, it hooks itself into Windows, Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome, making it difficult to remove.
